Alfriston School eNews – Term 4, Week 2

27.10.22    Week 2  Term 4

Kia Ora from Mrs Cook.

It is lovely to have all our learners back at school for the final term of the 2022 school year. This  term our theme is ‘Time to Shine – Ko wai ahau inaianei?’.

We started the year with the question, ‘Who Am I?’ hence the reason we are finishing the year with the question ‘Who Am I now?’ Term 4 provides many opportunities for reflection and celebration, and we know our learners are going to be very proud of the personal and academic progress they have made.

You will find a list of important dates below, there is a lot happening this term so please pop these dates on your calendar or in your diary. There are many opportunities for you as whānau to be involved and we look forward to seeing you at these events. There will be more details about events as each one approaches.

Please remember if you ever have any concerns, queries or worries to get in contact sooner, rather than later. We want every learner and all community members to feel safe and happy here at school, and will spend the time with you to ensure this is happening.

Have a lovely weekend and I hope to see you at the Athletics Day on Tuesday 🙂

Learning Celebrations

Room 12

This term in Room 12 we are consolidating and preparing for the next big step in our learning journeys. We are making sure we have basics for maths covered (fractions, decimals and percentages), completing our designed learner choice art projects, learning about the Marae and Reo, getting involved in sports activities with Northern Districts Cricket, MIT School of Sport and a Food for thought program to help us with nutrition.

While it is a super busy time, we will also be reflecting and taking account of our time together to appreciate what has happened over the year.

Room 13

Room 13 has started Term 4 with energy, good humour, and a focus on completing our learning for 2022.  Each one of us is in the process of completing our amazing, large-sized dragon art before heading into our individually selected art pieces that will enable us to practice our skills of symmetry and design.
Understanding the significance of 5 November in Aotearoa history, we are discovering the story of Parihaka one step at a time, starting with the legend behind the maunga of Taranaki.  For maths, we are exploring our knowledge of geometric formulas and practicing our accuracy using geometric tools such as protractors, compasses, and rulers.

The highlight of our last two weeks, of course, is the House Fun afternoon on Wednesdays – where we are all proudly showing our leadership skills, organisational skills, abilities to work with learners of different ages, and naturally, having a lot of fun!

Amazing Artists at Alfriston!

Caitlin Dorasamy (Room 13) created this magnificent Dragon’s Eye in A2 size, using oil pastels and working with the concepts of line and colour to create a stunning image with 3D effects.

Other News & Reminders

SUNHAT TERM – HEALTH AND SAFETY REMINDER:

Sunhats are required for Term 4 and sandals are encouraged. If learners do not have a hat they will be required to sit or play in the shade.

LATENESS…
As previously indicated it is vital learners are onsite and ready to start the day by 8.45 am. The first 15 minutes of the school day set learners up for success. We are currently tracking lateness and will be contacting the whānau we are concerned about.

EARLY TO SCHOOL
We have also noticed a growing number of children arriving at school very early, please do not send your child/children to school before 8 am.  It is a long time for them to stand on cold/wet days.  We ask that you make alternative arrangements for your child on those days you need to start early.  This is a health & safety concern for us as we do not have a before-school care facility and teachers/staff are unable to supervise children as they are busy preparing for their school day.
SICKNESS
If your child is sick with vomiting they are required to remain at home and away from school for at least 24 hours.

CONTACT DETAILS

It is important that we hold the correct details for our learners on file, especially if we have to contact you in an emergency. Have you recently changed your address, email or phone number? Please can you let the office know so we have up-to-date accurate records.

Uniform

Second-Hand Uniform Shop Re-opened in the Boiler Shed

The school’s 2nd Hand Uniform Shop/Bolier Shed is open on the first Wednesday of every month from 2:15 pm – 3 pm. Open on Wednesday 1 November from 2.30-3pm. All uniform items are sold for only $5 each and the money goes back to the school for our students. If you have any spare uniforms that you are not using and would like to donate to the Boiler Shed please drop them in the next time they are open or drop them off at the school office.  Due to the school holidays, the next time the Boiler Shed will be open is the 2nd of November.  For any further queries or urgent requests please reach out to Jess at jessandstella@gmail.com
