Kia ora e te whānau whānui
As we creep past the midway point in the year – with Thursday being the shortest day – it is timely for us to reach out as a Board. Our most recent Board additions – Paul Firth, Binu Rajendran, Arthur Chung and Sarina Davies – have been fast coming to terms with viewing and dealing with school life through a governance lens. That is something that puts everything into a different perspective. They have hit the ground running and been welcomed in by existing members Stu Hunter, Paul Tonkin and our Principal Carla Cook. It has been great to see differing perspectives being offered up which contribute to robust discussions and well thought out decisions by the Board. If any of our Alfriston School community would like to attend any Board meetings, please feel free to reach out, as you are more than welcome to come along.
As the term comes to a close we can celebrate some recent successes:
*94% (335/355) attendance at our Three Way Conferences. This demonstrates the importance whānau and staff place on learner achievement.
*Positive increases in schoolwide data (Mid Year Reading, Writing and Math data) – in all three core curriculum areas we have seen an increase in total number of learners achieving at or above their expected curriculum level.
*The many events and activities organised to provide our learners to interact and enjoy participating and learning schoolwide – House Event, Book Week, Jumping June, Pink Shirt Day, Friends and Family disco and movie night.
*Learner success and enjoyment in participating in extra curricular opportunities offered – Lit Quiz, Mathex, Sports (Netball Fun Day, ECCS Netball, ECCS and Counties Hockey, Bike Skills, Jump Jam etc)
*Our school values being the cornerstone of our school culture – our learners work as a team (whole school) to earn gold coins for showing our school values. They are able to choose which reward they would like the school to earn by putting their gold coin in that shute. Our learners have earnt 3 rewards in 2023 which is outstanding. A reminder the 3rd reward, Pyjama Day, will occur on the last day of this term (Friday 30 June).
It is also timely to remind our school whānau that our school values ought to be role modelled by us all. There have been several unsavoury incidents recently that highlight the need to ensure that our community is a safe place for us all – school staff, tamariki and the wider Alfriston School whānau.
Finally, a reminder on Thursday 29th June all whānau are welcome to attend the ‘I Am A Scientist’ morning from 9am – 11am. We encourage you to come along and to see the learning that has happened in Term 3 (visit all classes, not just your own child’s). You may also like to pack your morning tea and enjoy this with your child(ren).
Have a safe and happy term break and we will see you all on Monday 17th of July.
