eNews – Term 4, Week 3

27.10.2023

From the Principal

This week we held our Three Way Conferences. These are really valuable discussions that ensure we are all working together to ensure each child is supported to achieve to their full potential.

The Ministry of Education has clear expectations around reporting to parents:                              The reports must:

  • be written in plain language.
  • be provided at least twice a year.
  • include the student’s progress and achievement across The National Curriculum, as expressed in The New Zealand Curriculum.

As a school the written document is important however the conversations are the key. These conversations ensure every caregiver understands the report, has the opportunity to ask questions about the report and their child’s next steps in learning, and of course to celebrate the progress and achievement of their child. In 2022 we held Three Way Conferences once, in 2023 we have held them twice. WHY? Because we are commited to working together to ensure our learners achieve to their full potential.

These two ‘formal’ conference times are not enough though. I can not stress, beg, plead with you to regularly visit your child’s class and to have informal chats with your child’s teacher so that you are learning about your child’s progress and achievement all year long. That way you can support them at home with small, fun learning tasks/games.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to the whānau that attended these meetings. The teachers spend a lot of time writing the reports and preparing for the conferences so I know they will feel supported by you all. If you couldn’t make your time for any reason please contact the teacher and organise a catch up time to discuss your child’s learning.

TERM 4 IS BUSIER THAN EVER………..

A reminder that all dates are on our google calendar (school website) and we update the pdf calendar (at the bottom of this eNews) all the time. Please regularly check what’s coming up and ask if you have any questions. We are organising multiple (actually 10+) events at a time and we get information out as soon as we can.

ARE YOU LEAVING OR DO YOU HAVE AN IN ZONE LEARNER DUE TO START SCHOOL THAT WE ARE UNAWARE OF?

In order to confirm staffing and organise classes we need to know if your situation is changing. Can you please update us asap.

This week through chats with learners at the gate I have discovered 2 families are moving overseas……if you too are moving please, please let us know. We have a long waitlist of learners wanting to join Alfriston School.
