Term 4, Week 7 eNews – have a fantabulous weekend :)

24.11.2023

From the Principal

Week 7 is coming to an end, only 3 weeks and 2 days left of the 2023 school year – wow. Maybe I’m getting old but the years are passing by faster and faster! I am going to share a few celebrations we’ve had this week…..

Graduation Celebration

Last night our Year 8 learners, their whānau and a few staff went to Melba Cafe in Karaka for the Year 8 graduation dinner. The intermediate teachers (Ms Paul, Mrs Melville and Mrs Jambhulkar) did an amazing job in decorating the venue and the cafe provided delicious food for all to enjoy. It was lovely to see the learners and caregivers interacting with each other and enjoying the dance floor.

We are very proud of our Year 8 learners and glad they enjoyed their special evening.

Powhiri Celebration

This morning we held our termly powhiri to welcome new learners and their whānau and it was a lovely occasion. There were a few ‘yay’ moments around the powhiri this morning…..

* A learner hopping out of her car this morning and saying to me “It’s powhiri this morning aye Mrs Cook”, I said “it sure is” and her response “Oh yay i’m so excited”

*A caregiver who was in the manuhiri group (those being welcomed to our school) talked to staff about being feeling privileged and very special.

*Another caregiver who attended this morning said to me “you guys do a lot at this school aye”. I agreed with him and let me know that just this week as a staff we brainstormed all the additional events / opportunities we’ve provided this year and it filled the whiteboard. It was lovely for someone to notice and acknowledge the staff efforts.

A big thank you to Madison, Sienna, Ricci, Leroy, Izaiah and Cormack for their roles this morning and to Mr Wallis and Mrs Galvin for speaking on behalf of the staff.

Athletics Celebration

Yesterday the Year 0-3 learners had their Athletics Day at school. They ran, jumped and threw all day long, and by the end of the day they were exhausted 🙂 The event was organised by Tupu Tahi’s whānau leader Amy Sila and it was superb. Well done and thank you Mrs Sila.

UNIFORM Reminders

Hats! Hats! Hats! Hats!

We ask that caregivers support us by ensuring our uniform expectations are followed. A few reminders:
  • Learners are to wear plain black shoes to school.
  • The only jewellery items to be worn are a watch, stud earrings and if required an item of cultural significance (this should be discussed with Mrs Cook or Mrs Galvin).
  • Additional layers of clothing under our uniform for warmth should be grey in colour.
  • Hair below the collar is tied up using black, brown, white or navy hair ties.

Room 11

Room 11 was enthusiastic to know what Term 4 brings this year. The major focus is Performing Arts and our minor focus is Digital Technology. We have been involved in preparing for the ‘Time to Shine’ concert as part of our major Performing Arts focus. We are initiating and refining ideas with others to plan and develop dances. We are celebrating our unique artistic expressions of self, community, and culture by collaborating with our groups and devising class performances.

For Maths, we are currently rounding up the Geometry unit and we are looking forward to starting Statistics next week where we will be planning and conducting statistical investigations.

Digital Technology as our minor focus is enabling us to make decisions; create digital content, use digital tools, and develop our problem solving skills. We have been identifying various digital devices and explored its name, function and uses. Room 11 had interesting group discussions on how technology has changed our lives in terms of communication, comfort, health, shopping and entertainment. We got creative with ideas by writing digital story books and currently we are exploring  film study.

We explored different sports like High Jump, Long Jump, Shot put, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m races and challenged ourselves to do our best at Athletics day. This term, Room 11 did their Bike Training session and challenged themselves with various fun bike riding games. We enjoy playing fun PE games with other intermediate classes.

Room 11 learners, Reetinder, Gurjot, Raina, Mannat and Ryna participated in the Girls Cricket festival. The Year 8 girls were the overall winners. Room 11 learners Akaldeep, Ethan, Zebadiyah, Regan and Carter were a part of County’s Volleyball team. Mikaiah, Faith, Gurjot, Raina, Harkirat, Akaldeep, Nirav and Regan were part of the  ECCS Touch Rugby teams. All teams showed great sportsmanship and represented Alfriston School with pride!

We completed designing our Tui’s that represented us and these are going to be left behind at school as a legacy.

At Tuakana Teina sessions, we teamed up with Room 6 and taught indoor and outdoor games to each other. Room 11 read out the online storybooks they created with these learners. We got into groups and created some riddles on different topics for others to guess. These sessions are fun and we look forward to having some more fun as we reach the end of the term.
