SUPPORT FOR TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS
Principal and Teacher collective agreement negiotiations continue and as you know last week many marched down Queen Street to let the government know that we need better. Below I have shared some information which explains the focus for the teacher negiotiations. You will notice that everything we are asking for leads to better learning conditions for our tamariki. We love what we do, but need the Government’s support to ensure our schools are resourced appropriately.
We know you, our Alfriston School community, appreciate the work our teachers do. Many have shared their support with kind words and backing prior to our strike day. How else can you support our tumukai (Principal) and kaiako (Teachers)?
-Write a letter of support to our local MP Judith Collins or our Labour MP Anahila Kanongata’a-Suisuiki
-Talk to people about the great job teachers and Principals do
-Celebrate Alfriston School with friends and family

Yummy Apple Sticker Promotion
Alfriston School is taking part in the Yummy apple sticker promotion. By collecting Yummy fruit stickers from apples or stonefruits or Yummy bag labels we have the opportunity to receive a share of $200,000 worth of sports equipment for our school. Each class has a Yummy apple sticker collection chart in their classroom and learners are encouraged to stick their Yummy fruit stickers or labels onto the chart. The more stickers we collect, the more sports equipment we receive.
This promotion runs until the end of Term 3 so there is plenty of time for us to collect!
Thank you for supporting this fantastic promotion.

The Amazing Room 11 is having an exciting and educational time lately, with a diverse range of activities in various subjects. In Science, the class went to the zoo and studied various animals and their adaptations, including physical, behavioural, and physiological adaptations. They also investigated the characteristics of living things and studied the anatomy and physical features of animals, birds, and reptiles. The class is currently studying adaptations in plants and animals, as well as developing an understanding of the food chain.
In English Writing, the students have been working on autobiographies, recount writing, and figures of speech from poetry. The class has also been engrossed in a novel study, which involved choosing one character from the novel and creating a character profile. The students drew a sketch and provided an opinion about the character’s personality, actions, and how the character changed throughout the story.
In Math, the class has been practising their skills in multiplication and division, as well as decimal calculations. These foundational skills are essential for students to excel in more complex mathematical concepts in the future.
n Art, the students made ‘poupou’ and designed clothes for Moana and Maui, showcasing their creativity and artistic abilities. Additionally, the class created a New Zealand History Timeline, which displays important historical events in New Zealand’s past, helping the students understand the country’s rich history.

The Gold Coin rewards have been very popular with all the learners working together towards one of the five rewards. Coins are awarded to any and many learners for displaying the school values of Challenge, Pride, Excellence or Empathy. We are pleased to announce that a whole school reward for a lunchtime swim took place this week. The learners LOVED it! They have chosen another reward to go on the gold coin shoot of PJ day, watch this space.

We need a few parents to come in to help collect and assemble the hampers for the holiday hamper on Thursday the 28th of March. If you have an hour free and you think this is something you could help with, can you please email Sarina Davies (sdavies@alfriston.school.nz) This is a great way to give a little bit of time to our school and meet some other wonderful parents.

FACE-TO-FACE COMMUNITY WORKSHOPS FOR THE CHANGES TO PLANNING AND REPORTING
The Ministry of Education are holding face-to-face ākonga, parent, whānau and community workshops, where they will be talking about planning and reporting. The programme, Te Whakangārahu Ngātahi | Planning Together, is focused on preparing for the upcoming changes to planning and reporting legislation and requirements.
They would like to share these preparations with you, to not only ensure you are in the know, but also to gather your feedback on the proposed supports – e.g. the tools, resources and support channels to be developed. They need your voice and help co-creating these supports, to ensure they are fit for purpose and add value where it is needed.
These workshops will be held at the following places from 6 – 8:30pm:
- Tuesday 28 March: Bluelight, Papakura. 159 Dominion Road, Papakura
- Wednesday 29 March: Henderson Intermediate School: 70 Lincoln Road, Henderson
If you’d like to take part in either of these workshops, you can email planning.together@education.govt.nz to register your interest. Food and drink will be provided, and they look forward to seeing you there.
Further information on planning and reporting and the consultation process can be found here: Te Whakangārahu Ngātahi: Planning Together for Ākonga Success – Our School, Our Community – Conversation space (education.govt.nz).
